Haiti Rapper Princess Eud Discusses Her Emerging Clothing Line Iyoudi Collection

Haiti-based rapper Princess Eud lives for fashion. Just take a gander at any of her social media accounts, and you’ll see her, stylishly clad, sometimes with a canvas cap, sometimes with a knitted hat covering her back-length dreads—dreads that flow on shape-fitting tee-shirt and knee-ripped jeans. Her ear lobes are almost always adorned with Nephilim-sized, trendy earrings and bangles roll from her wrist to her forearm.
Indeed, Haiti’s high princess of rap dazzles with fashion as much as she dazzles with music. Music…now that’s her first love. Princess Eud (pronounced Heyd…not Ood, as I wrote in a previous article), spits socially-conscious rap, with lyrics that preach self-respect, and female empowerment. Having given her all to music, fashion seemed the next big avenue for the rapper-singer and now fashion designer. The Iyoudi Collection offers a modern look with kente cloth patterns that echo West African fashion.
Kreyolicious: How did you develop your own sense of style?
I’m the type of person who’s in love with colors, so I combine a great many colors. I soak in everything that’s around me, like art, geometrical shapes, my country’s culture—and I take those and combine them with my own ideas…and that’s essentially shaped my own style.
Kreyolicious: Did you debate on other names before you settled on the name for your collection?
At first, I gave it the name Princess Eud because that name was already out there. I thought the minute you say that name, people already know who you’re talking about…But recently, me and my associate thought that Iyoudi Collection had more marketing potential, so that’s why, I’ve chosen to call it Iyoudi Collection instead.
Kreyolicious: What’s the woman who wears pieces from the Princess Eud collection like?
The type who have a sense of glamour in them, who believe in themselves, who love color. Ladies who are cool and very stylish.
Kreyolicious: How did you determine what pieces to include in the collection?
First, I started to test them out by wearing them, and posting photos on the internet. The ones that got the most reaction—those are the ones I chose to be part of the collection.
Kreyolicious: That’s a good strategy. How has been the fan reaction in terms of your collection?
My fans are really excited. They’re really happy about the initiative. They can’t wait for the next collection to be released.
Kreyolicious: Will the pieces be available for sale in the good ole USA?
I’m working hard on that. But I can’t give a date as of yet.
Kreyolicious: Fashion is all about keeping up with trends. Will you be adding other pieces in fashion seasons to come?
I think from time to time, I’m going to add a few more pieces. It’s a question of [keeping up] with the times and [style] revolution. If things [in terms of fashion trends] change, I’m going to have to come up with something different. I can’t be doing the same thing all the time. Otherwise, the customers will get tired of Iyoudi Collection. [Laughter]
